The Freedom of Freediving by Neels Swanepoel

A combination of extreme sport and meditative art form, freediving has gained great support over the past few years. Freediving is a specialised form of "snorkeling" by which you can dive to depths of up to 30m without the constraints of scuba gear. Breath hold (apnea) diving offers you an opportunity to interact with the underwater world in a magical way difficult to describe. You are part of the sub aquatic environment in an unobtrusive manner that makes it possible for you observe all the creatures, reef life and structures in a first hand way that is much more rewarding than a watching documentary can ever be.

Our reef structure and aquatic life in this area is of such a nature that people come from far and wide to dive in the ocean that is on our doorstep. Beginners can familiarise themselves with being in the water in Swartvlei near the mouth on incoming tide. Then you can start exploring the ocean in the bay on the way to Gerickes Point where conditions are often very calm. The reef structure here varies in depth between 1 and 5 meters. For the more experienced there is the reef on the outside of Gerickes Point that stretches about 300m out to sea and varies in depth between 5 and 15m. Here you are really out in the blue ocean with magnificent reef structures, swim-through caves big enough to park a car in, fish, rays, sharks, dolphins and whales. First hand encounters with all these have an odd way of putting your life back into perspective.
